Auteur theory, theory of filmmaking in which the director is viewed as the major creative force in a motion picture. Arising in France in the late s, the auteur theory—as it was dubbed by the American film critic Andrew Sarris—was an outgrowth of the cinematic theories of André Bazin and François Truffaut.   It is best to approach this subject, then, by situating it in relation to other fields, including feminist film theory, film theory in general, philosophical work on film, and feminist aesthetics. Feminist philosophy of film is rapidly expanding as philosophers with diverse interests turn their attention to film.

The book will prove an invaluable reference and guide to readers interested in a deeper understanding of the issues and insights presented by film philosophy." Film and Philosophy" includes essays on: Hugo Munsterberg, Vilem Flusser, Siegfried Kracauer, Theodor Adorno, Antonin Artaud, Henri Bergson, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Emmanuel Levinas.   Introduction: The Politics of Film Theory and Its Discontents 1. Thinking in Images: Film Theory, Feminist Philosophy and Marlene Dietrich by Catherine Constable. Felicity. J. Colman. July Book Reviews. Issue Shameless. That’s the word that comes to mind when I think of women like Marlene Dietrich – clever, strong, and defiantly erotic in the face of the hypocritical, hierarchical patriarchy. Readings from contrasting angles and points of view discuss the value of film theory, the nature of film narration, the debate on whether films can be socially critical, and the question of what we can learn from film. Offering clear introductions and thought-provoking questions, this book is ideal for anyone interested in the philosophy of film/5(17).
